Influenced by the work of Kevin Kumashiro and his call for ‘disruptive knowledge’ as well as Judith Butler’s work with queer theory, I have conducted a critical policy analysis of outdated and updated Ontario education curriculum documents for Health and Physical Education (grades 1 – 12), Language (grades 1 – 12), and Social Science (grades 9 – 12). I have assessed these documents for content that addresses sexual orientation and gender identity and have noted changes made in revised documents that contain more inclusive language. It is my intention that with the findings from this study, educators become more aware of the literature that supports their pedagogical choices so that modern curriculum is implemented effectively and heteronormative views are challenged.
