Abstract

“Raising Race Questions” uses action research and case study methodology to examine the conflicts, questions and revelations that arise when theory meets practice for teachers as they research race and culture in their classrooms. I have detailed and examined seven white teachers’ research and learning processes over the course of one year, as they moved responsively between theories of race, culture and education, and their application in the classroom. The focal teachers are from three different teacher inquiry groups in an independent school, an urban public school district and a suburban public school district.
