This study explores the relationship between achievement goals and emotional response to feedback in a computer-based learning environment designed to support clinical reasoning. Medical and dental student participants (N = 24) demonstrated a high mastery goal orientation and reported experiencing low levels of emotions in response to computer-based expert feedback. In line with the growing body of literature on achievement motivation and achievement emotions, mastery goals predicted how closely a participant’s solution matched an expert solution, while performance goals predicted positive feedback emotions of pride, joy, and relief. Further research is necessary to determine whether this emotional response influences the cognitive processing of feedback in support of future learning and performance.
