This mixed-methods study examines the impact on student school behavior and academic performance of the Student Centered Active Learning Environment (SCALE) initiative. This program focused on both changing teachers’ classroom strategies in the classroom through on-going professional development activities, and student hands-on use learning through a range of additional technology tools and resources in each classroom. The context for the study was 20 total classrooms (five classrooms located in each of four different buildings) in a high minority, high poverty urban district of approximately 9,000 students.
Results indicate positive mean changes in the treatment students in terms of outcome measures, as compared with non-treatment students matched based on propensity score matching.
