Preservice Teacher Assessment: A Comparison Study

Abstract

Building off participation in a national study on teacher performance, we present findings from a quasi-experimental study that compared two performance assessments: the national TPA (teacher performance assessment) and a state PPA+ (preservice performance assessment). Matched pairs of teacher candidates completed the assessments during student teaching, which were compared in terms of reliability (inter‐rater and internal consistency), content validity (alignment with state and program standards), construct validity (alignment with licensure tests, GPA, supervisor ratings, employment status), criterion validity (alignment between assessments), and candidate learning (self‐reported and observed effects on skills and knowledge). Although reserach evaluating assessment tools are not unique, comparison studies are; this study represents the only research to date comparing the national TPA with a current state assessment.
