Finding, Retaining, and Graduating Women and Minority Students in Doctoral-Level Mathematical Sciences

Abstract

This paper is based on a workshop held at the American Institute of Mathematics in 2006, aimed at Finding and Keeping Graduate Students in Mathematical Sciences, especially U.S. women and under-represented minority students. Teams consisting of 2-3 faculty members from eight graduate departments and eight facilitators participated in the workshop. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the workshop at the represented departments. Qualitative data from seven of the eight departments were collected from 59 participants (30 faculty members, 29 students). Data from each department was analyzed separately and then pooled across the departments. The major finding revealed that majority of the departments provided opportunities that supported graduate students as people and as learners.
