Strategies for Building a Profession: Reflections on a University-District Professional Development Project for Seventh- and Eighth-Grade Mathematics and Science Teachers

Abstract

The presentation features a 3 year professional development project designed to enhance the content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, assessment practices, and academic language development strategies of project participants: 30 middle school mathematics and science teachers teaching in 4 urban schools. The presenters will discuss data collected on participants' experiences and learning through lesson study cycles and summer institutes. Findings reveal the complexities of teacher learning and suggest strategies and structures that best facilitate the transformation of classroom practices and routines.
