Browsing to Achieve: Intention-Based Web Browsing Linked to Performance

Abstract

The GlobalEd2 (GE2) project is a problem-based learning intervention that places 7th and 8th grade students in an online international negotiation simulation. Using Google Analytics, it is possible to view the browsing patterns of students visiting the GE2 website resources, and comparing this information with students’ scores on writing assignments has provided a window into the relationship between web-browsing and performance. Significant differences were found across states in regards to the quality of students’ writing of closing statements (N = 171) that supported the hypothesis that intention-based web-browsing within the GE2 website can positively relate to performance. Further analyses provided some additional and unexpected findings from which the authors offer suggestions that aim to inform future educational website design.
