(Re)Thinking Machismo: Race, Gender, and Persistence Among Latino Male College Students

Abstract

Concurrent with discourse on the “crisis” facing young men of color in the P-20 educational system, there has been additional attention to the peculiar challenges facing Latino males. Notwithstanding the (legitimate) anxieties some educators voice concerning the (over)emphasis on men – which has the potential to ignore the significant challenges Latina women endure in educational settings – Latino male youth are experiencing tremendous disadvantages. At the center of the “dropout” phenomenon within the K-12 system are Latino young males. This paper will contribute to the growing body of literature that both documents the raced-gendered challenges and barriers to Latino male success in postsecondary education as well as provide insight into the ways Latino men in our study navigated their college experiences.
