An Analysis of Urban Students’ Attitudes, Behaviors, and Academic Communities in Mathematics

Abstract

This study builds on the work of Walker (2006) that explored academic communities for urban high school students. The purpose of the current study was to: (1) understand the mathematics attitudes and behaviors of urban high school students enrolled in an after-school academic program, (2) determine the relationships that exist between students’ mathematics attitudes and behaviors and the identification of academic communities, (3) further explore the academic communities urban high school students identify in mathematics. This study utilized a mixed methods design to analyze data for 143 Black and Latino students in a northeastern urban city. This study offers an opportunity to better understand the role of academic communities from a lens attached to students’ attitudes and behaviors in mathematics.
