Music Making as Place Making: Case Studies of Place-Based Community Music in Japan

Abstract

Place is a nexus of time, space, and experience. This applies to musical experience: Place shapes musical ways of knowing, and musical experience shapes one’s sense of place. In other words, music making is place making. Acknowledging that place is a meaningful learning context, this study examines place as a pedagogical underpinning of community music making. How does the sense of place affect the experience of music? In what ways can the scope of music education be expanded by locating music learning in specific places? This study aims to answer these questions through three cases of community music making in Japan. The outcomes include identifying the beliefs, structures, and processes of place-conscious music education within and across the cases.
