The Role of Faculty Development in Curricular Transformation for Internationalization

Abstract

The social, political, and economic changes of the late-20th and early-21st centuries have made internationalization central to the work of higher education in the United States. While universities have engaged in a number of internationalization strategies, curriculum transformation is often heralded as central to these efforts. Despite this, little is known about the curriculum transformers themselves. This study explores how one faculty development initiative influenced faculty participants’ perspectives on internationalization, and how that in turn has played a role a broader internationalization effort. Results of this study point to the importance of both instrumental and transformative learning experiences for faculty, and highlight the benefits and limitations of faculty development as a strategy for broader internationalization.
