Uncovering and Discovering Multiple Realties: An Exploration of Emerging Scholars’ Positionalities Toward Research, Researcher, and Research Participants

Abstract

Using Tillman’s (2002) framework for culturally sensitive research (CSR), this study explores doctoral experiences in a research course that centers culture throughout the research process. Data sources include one-on-one interviews, coursework, focus groups, and research team meetings with two cohorts. Preliminary findings show students engaging with notions of culturally sensitive research as they position themselves in relation to research itself and to research participants in their studies. This study has the potential to expand notions of CSR to include a focus on research with African immigrants, as well as to inform the work of professors in engaging students in CSR.
