Abstract

This mixed-method study extends the research on the Community of Inquiry (CoI) model of understanding successful online courses to include the effects of the affordances of the Learning Management System (LMS) used to host the course. We propose a model to explain the effects of the LMS affordances and the Community of Inquiry (CoI) on course satisfaction. We then report preliminary results of survey data from courses taught in two LMSs to test hypotheses derived from the model. Our findings suggest that the perceptions of the teaching technology used in online courses affect the CoI and course satisfaction, thus supporting our hypotheses.
