In this era of high standards for all students, schools cannot afford to continue to discover talent in some students, students who will do well independent of the effectiveness of the learning environment or instruction; talent must be developed in every student. A convincing approach to enhance student learning is a focus on the design and delivery of optimal/flow learning environments in teaching. Teachers as architects of educational experiences and creators of learning processes must understand how to construct opportunities for optimal learning. This chronological mixed methods study provides baseline data on the flow phenomenon, explored factors and conditions influencing the flow experience, and examined perceived benefits, facilitators, and inhibitors of flow in the music environment at the secondary level.
