Abstract

Access to qualitative data from a recent national consensus process led by the National Advisory Council on Innovation & Entrepreneurship (NACIE) provides a rich source of information for describing what appears to be a new vision for the social value of research as defined by university leaders. Responses articulate university commitments to increase commercialization and requests for federal policy changes. Results indicate that universities seek to be more involved with commercialization at an earlier stage in the process than they are currently, that the federal government could incentivize and better facilitate innovation, and that the US should move towards a larger innovation and entrepreneurial network among universities. The findings have implications for the emergent field of research policy.
