The Peace Education Archipelago: Some Observations

Abstract

Over the last 50 years peace education has evolved all over the world. Its formation can be compared to an archipelago in that entities or islands have emerged with or without inspiration from those already formed. Thus each entity has emerged and inspired by contextual conditions in the locality and with varying degrees of inspiration from the outside. Communications among the islands is variable. In this paper I shall make some observations of the formation of the archipelago in terms of 1) the degree of inspiration from the local contextual conditions giving rise to the formation of peace education, 2) the degree of influence from those peace education islands already in existence and 3) the communication patterns evolving among the islands.
