Developing a Diagnostic Test for Introductory Computer Science Courses: An Application of Cognitive Diagnostic Modeling

Abstract

Often, students encounter difficulty in the beginning courses of computer science programs and change programs, leading to large dropout rates in these programs. Based on the literature, it is hypothesized that there is a specific set of skills that are necessary to perform well in these courses. In order to provide the type of fine-grained diagnostic feedback that is necessary to fully inform test-takers of their strengths and weaknesses in these skills, Cognitive Diagnostic Modeling (CDM) was used to analyze a set of skills deemed necessary for success in an introductory computer science course with the final exam for this course. The results are expected to aid in the development of a diagnostic skills test for beginning computer science courses.
