Students’ Individual Characteristics That Predict Success in Studying Languages Abroad

Abstract

The study aims to assess individual learners’ characteristics in study abroad (SA) language learning outcomes. The project has particularly investigated the best point in foreign language study for overseas immersion and the language learning motivations of students who study less frequently taught languages abroad versus more frequently taught languages abroad. A hundred forty three U.S. students were recruited including 30 different languages studied in 32 different countries with at least one participant involved. The project employed multiple methods and proceeded inductively inferring general results from specific student and faculty responses. Findings of the proposed project will make a significant contribution to SA research and to the field of international education.
