This poster presents preliminary findings from one part of a much larger research project that will result in a book about education and democracy at Colegio Naleb’, a preK-12 school in Guatemala. I interviewed a sample of 11 teachers and 2 school leaders. The interview questions ask about definitions of citizenship and democracy, the school’s three-branch government, and the experiences of teaching and leading in a school community that emphasizes democratic practices, academic excellence, and civic participation. Through the larger project, I hope to be able to explain how ideas of democracy translate and play out in the lives of the current students at this school as well as in the lives of its graduates.
