Described in this paper are five long-held traditions in grading and reporting in U.S. schools that represent serious obstacles to reform. The philosophical and historical roots of these traditions are explained, the reasons for their negative influence on learning and learners are outlined, and relevant research related to each is presented. Finally, research-based, alternative policies and practices designed to counter the influence of these traditions are discussed.
