Meanings and Implications of Culture in Environmental Education Research

Abstract

What may be achieved through taking up the complex notion of culture in environmental education research? Five researchers from the University of Saskatchewan endeavour to identify and articulate a thread woven through each individual’s research and advocacy in pursuit of environmental learning. As researchers, we have come to recognize the symbols and practices of ecological degradation to be ubiquitous throughout our daily lives; and, we have increasingly determined that it is at the level of culture that we must direct our study and intervention. To this end, we wish to present a bricolage of research, drawing on empirical and theoretical sources, that collectively establishes the kind of capacity we see as creating the conditions for cultural change.
