Assessing the Moral Judgment of Medical Students at the Start of a Four-Year Professional Curriculum

Abstract

We embarked on a study to assess the moral judgment of first year medical students. The SOM class of 2011 (N = 236) took the Defining Issues Test (DIT-2) during orientation. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and one-way ANOVA were run to test for main effects of sex on mean P scores. General P score mean is 43.67 (range 0 to 95). Gender had a significant main effect on P scores (p< .01). We re-administered the DIT-2 to the same cohort during in spring 2011, and to students in the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). We shall compare data for the SOM 2011 cohort, and data for the GHHS students to the 2011 cohort, to determine if P scores are significantly different.
