Blossoming Branches and Forgotten Roots: Toward a More Mindful Teacher Education

Fri, April 13, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 2&3

Abstract

Contemplative educators in the United States teach not only content, but also include and embrace what pedagogue Parker Palmer terms “the teaching presence.” Put a bit differently, “Education, in its broadest sense, is every mannerism, habit, posture, and attitude that children learn consciously and unconsciously from the adults around them,” (Hill, 2006). How do teacher educators prepare for this constant challenge to nurture student learning? This paper will introduce a framework of mindful teaching, culled from experience, professional literature, and from the burgeoning field of contemplative pedagogy.
