This practitioner research examines a collaborative arts integrated literacy project between The Fabric Workshop & Museum in Philadelphia and my ninth grade English students. This work addresses the following research questions: How can an arts integrated pedagogy foster critical literacy in high school English classrooms? How does the multimodal nature of the project afford students the opportunity to imagine themselves as collaborative co-authors of texts? In what ways might a student identity as “author” translate to student agency and a critical consciousness? An artifact analysis of student work surfaces the affordances of a multimodal arts integrated pedagogy, and offers practitioners an understanding of how students make sense of their worlds.
