Abstract

This project developed and evaluated interventions specifically designed to strengthen content literacy of struggling high school readers by providing content-area teachers with literacy lessons, professional development, and mentoring to integrate reading instruction into their daily practice. The findings from the first two years of this federally funded study suggests that teachers are open to professional development on how to integrate reading into their content area classrooms and they saw a benefit to using content reading lessons. In addition, students showed gains in reading after having a short exposure to the reading lessons in their content area classrooms. This paper presents a promising way to increase the reading comprehension of students within content area classrooms.
