Abstract

This paper will discuss the preliminary findings of a research study underway in the 2011-2012 school year. The research looks to better understand perceptions of school and community as portrayed by Muslim girls in one school through the process of media production. Drawing on feminist ethnography, the researcher will discuss intersections of marginality and the multitude of factors related to the experiences of schooling and community by one group of marginalized youth, in an effort to understand how divisions between schools and communities in low-income areas can be bridged. Through the process of media production, the researcher will also consider how hands-on new media and technology training contributes to students’ learning of concrete and conceptual skills (e.g. literacy, critical thinking).
