Examining Relations Between Behavioral and Neurological Indices of Children’s Executive Functioning Skills and Academic Achievement

Abstract

Driven in part by linkages between growth of Executing Functions (EF) (e.g., response inhibition, working memory) and children’s school success, interest in the development of EF has increased. Although this development has been examined behaviorally, less is known about the relations between neurological changes and the acquisition of these skills in childhood. In addition, little research has focused on the contextual factors that may be related to children’s EF performance. Findings from a school-based investigation of children’s EF skills, including ERP data directly in the elementary school setting, will be presented. In addition, differences in children’s EF skills as a function of chronological age and experience in school will be discussed.
