Exploring Underrepresentation in Science From the Perspective of Latino and African American High School Students

Abstract

This research explores the underrepresentation of students of color in science from the perspective of Latino and African American high school students as they work alongside scientist mentors to design and conduct investigations during a week-long ocean science research camp. Findings indicate that student’s perceptions of how their ethnicity or gender are viewed in broader society matter not for the authentic scientific practices learned at camp, but for the pathways students feel are available to them when pursuing science. The level of mentors’ awareness surrounding the challenges their minority mentees face when pursuing science varied, even in a program focused on underrepresented youth. This research has implications for the design of programs aimed at providing underrepresented youth with science experiences.
