The Development and Analysis of the Middle School Student Reading Preferences Instrument

Abstract

The Middle School Student Reading Preferences instrument (MSSRPI) was developed to aid middle school reading teachers in assessing their students’ reading preferences. The development of the instrument included initial content analysis, a pilot test to conduct an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and initial reliability analysis, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and follow-up content analysis. Based on the exploratory factor analysis and initial reliability analysis the MSSRPI was revised to measure middle school students’ reading preferences on 12 subscales with reliabilities ranging from .697 to .908. The revised instrument was subsequently administered to a sample of 2,623 students in grades 6-8. A confirmatory factor analysis and further content validation are currently underway using these data.
