The Characteristics and Supports of Beginning Teachers: A Descriptive Look at the Nation and Seven Northeastern States

Abstract

This study, conducted by researchers at a Regional Educational Laboratory, examines the characteristics and supports of beginning teachers in seven Northeast states using the 2007/08 Schools and Staffing Survey. We examine how these teachers are prepared for teaching, the supports they received in their first year, and whether preparation variables are related to their sense of preparation in their first year of teaching. We focus on variables that previous research suggests may be related to teachers’ perception of success, effectiveness, and retention. Data on beginning teachers in the Northeast to national estimates.

In addition to meeting a need in the region for this information, this study contributes to the existing literature on beginning teacher preparation, working conditions, and support.
