The Influence of First Language Learning on Second Language Learning: Differences in English Learning Between Two First-Grade ESL (English as a Second Language) Students

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine how the first language learning influences the second language learning. The researcher try to explore how two eight-year-old ESL girls (one can read and write in her first language, and the other only can speak in her first language) show the differences during their second language learning in one ESL pullout classroom. This research study drew principally from case study design and included ESL classroom observation, informal interviews with the ESL teacher, and collection of classroom artifacts, describing and comparing the process of the second language learning of two girls. Finally, this study shows that the first language strategies and knowledge can be transferred to the second language learning.
