Impacting Rural Academic Achievement and Economic Development: The Case of New Tech Network Schools

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 10

Abstract

This research paper presents findings on the impact of the New Tech Network model on rural schools. A mixed methods study was conducted investigating the impact of the model on academic achievement and economic development in rural schools. New Tech high schools in these communities outperform comparison schools on measures of academic achievement, including standardized state tests. Analyses of economic development results demonstrate patterns of amplified economic impact on students, schools, and communities across rural New Tech schools. Early results show that high fidelity New Tech schools sparked community and business partnerships by encouraging strategic cultural brokers, including economic development coordinators and Chambers of Commerce, to be a partner in leading learning in their school community.
