The Impact of Cutbacks on School Music Programs in Three Midwestern States

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of cutbacks to music programs and effects in two Midwestern states. Research questions include how widespread budget cutbacks were from the 2010-11 school year to 2011-12, how cutbacks affected aspects of music teaching or music program delivery, and whether trends seem to be reversing or increasing from prior years’ data. All MEA members from the two states will be contacted by email with a link to complete an online questionnaire that was developed based on two pilot studies during the prior two years. Findings will provide insight into budget trends in the Midwest and how cutbacks affect teachers and their music programs.
