Families' experiences during the transition to school for their children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) were investigated. Results revealed that families' overall perceptions of the quality of care during preschool was better than their perceptions of elementary school support systems, while parents' perceptions of the impact of their children's disability on the family decreased as children made the transition to school. A variety of resources, such as familial, educational, and community support, seemed to help families through this difficult transition. Some of the families, however, struggled through these difficulties alone. The transition process from preschool to elementary school for children with ASDs, and their families, has important implications for school policies and interagency collaboration.
