Pathways and Potholes: Student Transitions From Community College to University in a Dual-Degree Partnership Program

Abstract

The White House and other policy leaders have put a renewed emphasis on postsecondary credentials and on community colleges as key players in providing degrees. Yet completion at the community college, transfer, and graduation from the four-year institution remain problematic. While articulation is necessary, it is not sufficient to promote success for all students aspiring to transfer. Understanding the students’ experience in a 2-year college/university collaboration can provide insights on transfer. Utilizing case study methodology with 36 student interviews, pathways and potholes were reported in academic, social, informational, institutional, and financial dimensions of transfer. The dual degree collaboration was motivational, provided early academic confidence, and smoothed transitions, yet left some students leaving the path early with debt.
