Educational Leadership and Career Derailment

Abstract

Leadership in education has distinct elements that set it apart from leadership in other fields. This study examined the behaviors associated with the career derailment of educational leaders compared to leaders in public and private sectors of the economy. Findings demonstrate that the behaviors associated with career difficulty for leaders in the field of education are different from the behaviors that are problematic for leaders in general. Additionally, the frequency of career difficulty in educational leadership is similar to that observed in non-profit and government organizations, and lower than banking and finance, healthcare, and manufacturing.
