Conceptualizing the “Conceptualization Stage” of an Ecologically Based Transformative, Multipartner, Mixed-Methods Research Project

Abstract

A paucity of studies exists regarding the initial phase of mixed methods research (MMR), particularly the analysis of the contexts under which question development occurs and how these interact. This instrumental case study of a large federally funded science education K20 partnership during its first year explores how the MM conceptualization process interacts with the context in which the project is situated. Systematically exploring five components of conceptualization has helped clarify project purposes, refine research and evaluation questions, and negotiate preconditions to support a five-year research plan. Combining an ecological metaphor and grounded theory/logic modeling has enabled conceptualization of the “big picture” of this complex partnership and strategically engage multiple stakeholders.
