The e-Math Forum: An expansion to supplement structured STEM support services

Abstract

STEM interventions for underprepared students often focus on learning styles, pedagogy, curricular modifications, and structured student support services. Despite these support systems, students continue to leave STEM degree programs, largely due to challenges with gateway math and/or science coursework. To address this problem at one institution, a supplemental online program, e-Math Forum, was developed to prepare conditionally accepted freshmen for success in college-level mathematics. Ninety-eight percent (98%) of the 91 students participating in the e-Math Forum successfully completed the program. While 61% of the successful students matriculated to Pre-Calculus, 40% were placed into Calculus I or II. For this poster, we describe the initial program, e-Math Forum pilot study and findings, and then discuss the implications of this work.
