Efficacy to Teach Statistics in Middle School: Development and Testing of an Instrument

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom B

Abstract

Self-efficacy to teach statistics is potentially a more complex concept than in mathematics or science education but programs to prepare teachers tend to have methods courses that focus on teaching mathematics, yet rarely any that focuses exclusively on teaching statistics. Our research team will present a new instrument designed to measure levels of this construct based on the Statistics Education guidelines for PreK-12 curriculum and those state standards for teacher knowledge and student learning outcomes that have specific statistics requirements. We will share preliminary results from an inter-institutional validity study as well as potential uses of the instrument for teacher education and program evaluation.
