Learning Argumentation Skills in Mathematics Education Using Collaboration Scripts

Abstract

In order to participate in argumentative discourse, argumentation skills have a tremendous importance across different dialogue situations in various domains. Collaboration scripts have been used to support students’ argumentation. Despite the fact that argumentation skills are also important in mathematics, empirical research on the effects of collaboration scripts is sparse in this domain. In an experimental study (N = 48) we investigated the impact of a collaboration script on the acquisition of argumentation knowledge in the context of mathematical proof tasks. We found a positive effect of the collaboration script on students’ declarative argumentation knowledge but not on the procedural knowledge. We conclude that, in order to support the acquisition of procedural knowledge, scripts should be designed more flexible.
