Paper Summary

A Figured World of Becoming: Positioning Identities of Preservice Art Teachers

Fri, April 13, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom A

Abstract

This presentation explores the ways in which pre-service teachers struggle with teacher identity as they engage in the process of becoming art teachers. Based on a qualitative study of 11 pre-service art teachers, we examine how student art teachers’ identities are fluid and multiply positioned in relation to their experiences with K-12 students, mentor teachers, curriculum, and schooling. Borrowing the theory of self developed by Holland, Lachicotte, Skinner, and Cain (1998), we focus on how pre-service teachers dwell in spaces of positionality, figured world(s), authoring, and world-making. Investigating information collected through interviews and classroom observations, we will present quotes, lesson details, and visual examples of how student teachers perceive themselves as positioned within and through discourse, action, and reflection.
