In this paper presentation, we report on the development of a youth writing collaborative in Washington, DC and explore theoretical frameworks that support the writing project’s mission: (1) to further humanities education in the local schools and community; (2) to provide youth an opportunity to experiment with writing in relation to their intellectual and emotional experience, outside of the demands of the current heightened standardization of literacy education; and (3) to offer professional development for secondary English teachers that allows them to gain professional authority through intellectual creativity and experimentation.
