Abstract

Education of Muslim children in the UK has been a contested issue. Since the arrival of Muslim migrants in UK in 1960s, a number of policies and initiatives have been designed to address the ethnic, cultural and religious needs of Muslim pupils in schools. However, these have raised concerns for the identity, achievement and cohesion of Muslim children. This paper presents findings from an ethnographic study of a Muslim school established to offer an education compatible with the faith and culture of Muslim pupils through the use of national, Islamic and ‘Islamacized’ curriculum. The paper throws light on some emerging issues to inform policies for multi-faith and multi cultural education in the UK.
