Making Science Accessible for Latino Parents and Children in Rural Communities

Abstract

Acceso la Ciencia: Haciendo la Ciencia Accesible para los Padres y los Ninos Latinos en Communidades Rurales, or Access Science: Making Science Accessible for Latino Parents and Children in Rural Communities (ACCESO) is a five-year informal science education project supported by the National Science Foundation. The project is designed to develop a community 'infrastructure' and provide specific experiences that will encourage Latino students to develop an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and support their pursuit of college level STEM. Over the course of the project, ACCESO staff and interns participated in over 160 events and reached more than 16,000 people. This paper provides results of a summative evaluation of the project and lessons learned.
