The Relationship Between the Student-School Counselor Ratio and Students' Postsecondary Preparation and Participation

Abstract

Student’s access to college information can be crucial for progressing through the high school to college pipeline. Students who attend crowded schools with fewer resources may also face barriers to gaining access to potential gatekeepers such as school counselors. This paper utilizes OLS and logistic regression to determine which students are more likely to attend high schools with higher student-school counselor ratios and how these ratios affect students’ likelihood of expecting to attend, planning to attend, applying for admission to, and enrolling in a postsecondary institution. The results indicate that based on the student-school counselor ratio, students receive differential access to school counselors and this affects their progression through the college preparation and application process.
