This study applies identity theory to explain how attributes of researcher identity function and develop in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate student development. The identity theory predicts that students’ existing identity attributes are sources of motivation for learning and these attributes may change as a result of participation in research activities. Using semi-structured interviews, we collected data from nine students on their graduate experiences and self-evaluations at multiple time points. Preliminary analysis of the longitudinal data identifies the attribute of methodicalness as important to development of research skills and specifies the mechanism of its change.
