Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom B

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate how to use wikibooks as a scaffolding tool to promote critical thinking skills of pre-service teachers in formal learning contexts. The degrees of online participation and critical thinking in wikibook creation under instructional guidance were examined. Two wikibook projects creating a class wikibook as part of a learning task were investigated: (a) an enhanced scaffolding wikibook project and (b) a minimal scaffolding wikibook project. This study was executed as a mixed-method study incorporating multiple-case study and computer-mediated discourse analysis. The findings identified key successful factors of pre-service teacher education in Web 2.0 technology-based learning environments and presented new instructional strategies for participatory learning.
