Using a qualitative feminist content analysis and theory of representation, this paper and photographic installation aims to give an account of early white women teacher travelers to Hawaii during the last half of the 19th century. This paper offers a way to conceptualize the connection between representational visibility and political power (Phelan, 2003) as a useful analytic lens to deepen understanding of the how we might move towards an more ethical framework for human relations within the colonial history of language and literacy education in Hawaii.
