The Use of the SCCT (Social Cognitive Career Theory) Model to Predict the Success of the PRODUCED (Providing Undergraduate Connections to Engineering Education) Program

Abstract

Using a portion of—self -efficacy, outcome expectations, interests, and goals—Lent and Brown’s Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) model as a framework (Lent, 1986), a quantitative survey was developed to measure motivation of students at community colleges in the state of Virginia to pursue engineering degrees and careers. Gender differences in terms of their possession of characteristics of the four variables were analyzed. The data were analyzed using internal consistency measures, descriptive statistics, correlations, factor analyses, and multiple regression. Cronbach’s alpha of four variables ranged from .75 to .91. All the three regression models yielded significant results. However, outcome expectations were not a good predictor of goals. Both men and women have comparable level of the four variables.
